Welcome
MORE THAN JUST PICTURES ...
In addition to 750+ images, you'll find over 100,000 words telling you what they're all about. There isn't a comments option on individual images but all feedback and offers of help sourcing material are warmly welcomed via the 'Leave a Message' facility. I've chosen not to deface my images with intrusive watermarks but politely remind you that it is copyright material. I usually add something new every week but there'll inevitably be some longer gaps between updates. Thanks for visiting.

01 Fact and Fiction - North East Major Bus Operators
This collection focuses on big company and municipal bus operators in the area broadly defined by the old county boundaries of Northumberland, Durham and North Yorkshire. All the images in this collection have been digitally modified. Some are digitally coloured versions of original monochrome pictures, whilst others have been modified to represent different vehicles - actual or fictitious. The selection reflects the source material that I have available and my own particular interests. This collection is arranged alphabetically by operator. UPDATED 20-NOV-09
04 Fact and Fiction - North East Independent Bus Operators
This collection focuses on independent bus operators in the area broadly defined by the old county boundaries of Northumberland, Durham and the North Riding of Yorkshire (bent a little to include Wright Bros of Nenthead). All the images have been digitally coloured and/or modified to represent different vehicles (real or fictitious). The selection reflects the source material that I have available and my own particular interests. This collection is arranged alphabetically by operator. UPDATED 27-NOV-09
06 Fact and Fiction - English and Welsh Bus Operators
All the images in this collection have been digitally modified as per the previous collections. This particular collection covers the 'rest' of England (the North East is covered separately) and Wales. I can't claim comprehensive coverage of either region - the collection is simply a mix of my own particular interests and whatever material I've been able to source. I'm always open to suggestions and offers of help. This collection is arranged alphabetically by operator within country (English buses first). UPDATED 27-NOV-09
08 Fact and Fiction: Scottish and Irish Bus Operators
All the images in this collection have been digitally modified as per the previous collections. This particular collection covers Scotland and Ireland, two parts of the UK for which I have very little first-hand knowledge or source material - but a growing interest. Additional operators will be added over time. This collection is arranged alphebetically by operator within country (Scottish buses first). UPDATED 27-NOV-09
11 Fact and Fiction - Non PSV Buses and Other Vehicles (Road and Rail)
This collection of digitally-modified images focuses on former buses and other vehicles used, amongst others, by bus operators in non-PSV roles, contractors, fire services and the armed forces. Railway-owned vehicles are included in a separate collection. There's no significance to the order in which images are presented, other than that each category of user has been kept together. For the moment, I've decided to keep the road and rail vehicles for each user together rather than include the latter in a general collection of rail vehicles. UPDATED 20-NOV-09
12 Fact and Fiction: Railway-Owned Vehicles (Road and Rail)
This collection of digitally modified images focuses on railway company-owned road and rail vehicles. I've excluded the Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway's buses (which are in the Scotland & Welsh collection) and London Transport's railway support vehicles (in the Other Non-PSV Buses etc collection). It isn't my intention to develop a comprehensive collection of rail vehicles in fictional liveries (there's at least one other site that does that well enough) - they're more of a supporting cast. UPDATED 27-NOV-09
21 Fact and Fiction - Benelux Buses
This collection focuses on the buses of Belgium and the Netherlands (I have no material for Luxembourg at the moment). Most images have been digitally coloured and/or modified to represent different vehicles, real or fictitious. The selection reflects the material that I have available - please do get in touch if you can help source material for future additions. This collection is arranged alphabetically by operator within country. UPDATED 26-SEP-09
22 Fact and Fiction - Malta and Gozo Buses
This collection of (mainly) digitally modified images covers the islands of Malta and Gozo. Some have previously appeared in the magazine Maltese Transport News. There's a brief note regarding third party copyright in the extended caption to the 'Sliema Route: Fordson/Gasan' image - don't hesitate to contact me if you have any issues with this. Click the thumbnails to view the extended captions if you wish to do so. UPDATED 14-NOV-09
23 Fact and Fiction - Rest of the World Buses
This collection focuses on buses beyond mainland Europe and the Maltese Islands. All images in this collection have been digitally modified (some are digitally coloured and others have been modified to represent different vehicles, real or fictitious). The selection reflects the limited source material that I have available and, by necessity, most are modified views of UK vehicles. If you can help, particularly with good quality archive views that can be digitally modified and/or coloured, then please do get in touch. As with the other collections, click the individual images to view the extended captions. UPDATED 25-SEP-09
31 Fact and Fiction - The Images Behind the Pictures
This collection provides a 'behind the scenes' look at some of the images that appear in other collections. Some of the drafts include subtle differences from the final published versions, whilst others never made it or were never intended for publication. All work has been prepared in Photoshop CS2, which is good enough for me without upgrading to the latest version. UPDATED 20-NOV-09
32 Magazines and Other Publishing Ventures
This collection illustrates some of the material that I've prepared for magazines and other publishing ventures. Initially it only contains features prepared for the magazine Maltese Transport News, an introduction to which can be found in the caption to the first image. Click the individual thumbnails to view the extended captions - you may need to scroll down to see them. UPDATED 28-AUG-09
41 Malta Buses at Night
I've always been interested in nightime photography but I'm no expert. My approach is actually very low-tech with a large slice of trial and error. Click the thumbnails to read the extended captions, which include a few hints and tips that I've learned along the way. UPDATED 01-JAN-09
42 Scarborough's Classic Buses
This collection focuses on the period from the late 1970s to the early mid-1990s (but with a couple of earlier and later views), when it was still possible to ride along the Scarborough sea-front aboard a traditional half-cab double-decker. 'Classic' is a matter of interpretation and I've no doubt that the Volvo B10M double-deckers that I've included are set to become classics. As always, click the thumbnails for extended captions and please do let me know if you can provide any additional information or corrections UPDATED 06-JUN-09

43 Blackpool's Traditional Buses
This collection records the final years of the traditional open-platform double-decker, seen through the eyes of an occasional visitor to Blackpool from the mid-eighties to early nineties - a fascinating period when the surviving Leyland PD3s were supplemented and ultimately replaced by ex-London Routemasters. As always, click the thumbnails for extended captions and please do let me know if you can provide any additional information or corrections. UPDATED 14-APR-09
44 Vectis Veterans
This collection contains a small selection of images from the Isle of Wight, which were mainly taken during day trips in 1989 and 1995. It focuses on the traditional half-cab double-deckers that provided an added attraction to this lovely island, which now has its own bus museum. Click on the individual images for additional information. See also the Unofficial Southern Vectis web site for a more comprehensive history of individual vehicles (see links). UPDATED 30-MAY-09
45 Interesting Independents (under construction)
This collection illustrates some of the more interesting independent operators that I came across in my travels during the 1980s and early 1990s (plus a few more recent rally shots). In most cases they were nothing more than fleeting visits, made whenever an opportunity arose to bend a business or family trip by a mile or two. In the days before the internet, or access to those 'in the know', finding many of these companies (whose registered address was not necessarily their operating base) was largely down to trial and error and seeking directions locally, although I do recall following one bus on its home run. UPDATED 30-MAY-09
51 Odds and Ends
This is an eclectic collection, intentionally presented in no particular sequence - except that the latest images will always be at the end. Some images are tasters of collections to come, whilst others are simply odds and ends that appealed to me. As with the main collections, click the thumbnails to read the extended captions. Sorry, the password to this collection is not available.
